Richard Pilbrow Lifetime Recognition Award 2026

Awarded to BERNIE DAVIS

Theo Farringdon of Theatre Projects with Bernie Davis

Bernie Davis joined the BBC from school and worked for BBC Outside Broadcasts as a Vision Engineer and Engineering Manager. As EM he lit a wide variety of programmes from the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and Grange Hill to Songs of Praise, The Royal Variety Performance and The BBC Proms. He left the BBC in 2001 and has worked as a freelance Lighting Director since then. As many of us in this room have experienced lighting for live events and for broadcast at the same time brings it’s own challenges, the human eye and the camera lens bringing very different optics to the scene.

Bernie has mastered the two and is responsible for bridging our two arts of Theatre and TV more effectively together in striking harmony than most. His credits as a freelancer range from cinema broadcasts of NT Live performances and Royal Opera House productions to Carols from Kings and Cardiff Singer of the World and the Young Musician competitions.

Bernie has helped countless theatre lighting designers through the pitfalls of allowing cameras into the room and he has also been the lighting director for many royal occasions including Royal Weddings and The Coronation of King Charles III. He has won multiple industry Awards which include BAFTAs, Royal Television Society Awards, Knight of Illumination Awards and now a Profile Award too!
