The Profile Awards have been created and are coordinated by Durham and Jennie Marenghi in association with the ABTT, the ALPD and the STLD; the Awards recognise lighting design excellence in Theatre and Television in the UK and the inaugural event took place at the Alexandra Palace theatre on the 6th of June 2024. The next event is at the Alexandra Palace on the 5th of June 2025.
Alongside eight specific Theatre awards and eight TV awards there is a Student Virtual Lighting Design competition sponsored by AC Entertainment Technologies and the Richard Pilbrow Lifetime Recognition Award by kind agreement with Richard’s family and sponsored by Theatre Projects.
The Theatre Awards are judged by eight UK theatre critics and are not open to nominations whereas the Television Awards are judged by broadcast professionals and can be nominated by anyone and the deadline for the 2025 TV Awards nominations is the 30th of April 2025. The Awards trophies are Patt 23M fixtures on stands, a miniature LED version of the iconic Rank Strand Patt 23 profile fixture modelled and produced in limited amounts by Hugh Chinnick.
Sponsorship take was incredible for the 2024 Awards with all the 16 Awards being taken up by the industry in as many days. This year the Headline Sponsor is once again Ayrton with the TV Awards being sponsored by Cameo, ChamSys, ELP Broadcast Lighting, LCR, LED Creative, Light Initiative, Rosco and Roxxlight. The Theatre Awards are sponsored by Chauvet Professional, Elation, ETC, Fix8 Group, GLP, TSL, SLX and Vari-Lite; the pre-show drinks reception is sponsored by Ambersphere Solutions and the Goody Bags at the end of the evening are sponsored by JLL.
The Student Virtual Lighting Design Award entries are judged by the professional Profile Awards TV and Theatre nominees and the Virtual competition student nominees receive an invitation to The Profile Awards event with the winner being announced live at the Awards at Alexandra Palace on the 5th of June, these awards are kindly sponsored by AC Entertainment Technologies.
The 2024 Profile Awards ceremony was an informal cabaret style seating affair, so no named seating at tables, which allowed everyone maximum mingling! We will be using the same successful format in 2025. Out of just over 200 guests in 2024 over half were lighting designers or lighting designer team members and we intend to keep that same ratio with around 250 guests in 2025.
